Members of the Nelson City Taxi Society often employ taxi drivers for full time and part time casual positions.
Taxi drivers must be punctual and honest. They need to be friendly, polite and able to relate well to their customers. Taxi drivers also need to be responsible, alert and patient, as they often drive along busy and congested roads, and are responsible for the safety of their passengers.
To become a taxi driver you need to have held a New Zealand Class 1 licence for at least two years. There are several tiers of employment available and they include;
- A waged driver employed by a Self employed vehicle owner and member of the Nelson City Taxi Society has to complete;
- an approved passenger endorsement course to obtain a ‘P’ Endorsement
- an Area Knowledge examination for the Nelson region
- the Nelson City Taxi Society Driver Induction training programme
- an application to the Society for approval to operate
- an employment agreement with your employer
- A self employed driver contracted to a vehicle owner and member of the Nelson City Taxi Society. A self employed driver must also complete;
- A Transport Service License test for passenger service.
- A certificate of responsibility, signed by the driver and the vehicle owner and / or a TSL Card issued by Land Transport New Zealand.
- A self employed driver must meet personal tax obligations and be registered for GST.
- A self employed owner/ driver. Once all the personal requirements of a self employed driver are met, an owner driver must apply to the Nelson City Taxi Society for membership, become a shareholder of the Society and provide a suitable vehicle. Please talk to us for details.

How to obtain a P Endorsement
You can apply for a P endorsement at your nearest Land Transport New Zealand driver licensing agent.
To meet the requirements of your P Endorsement application, the Nelson City Taxi Society recommends the approved course provider, Master Drive Services Ltd.
You should allow six to eight weeks for your application to be processed, because of the requirement to carry out a ‘fit and proper person’ check.

How to obtain a Transport Service Licence
Submit the following documents and fees to the nearest regional office of Land Transport NZ:
- A completed Application for transport service licence form (TL01). Note: must be witnessed by an officer authorised to take statutory applications, ie a Justice of the Peace, lawyer or an officer of Land Transport NZ.
- A completed Personal details form (TL02) for each person in control of the transport service - this includes all partners in a partnership application and all directors for company applicants. Note: must be witnessed by an officer authorised to take statutory applications, ie a Justice of the Peace, lawyer or an officer of Land Transport NZ.
- A copy of your certificate of knowledge of law and practice If the applicant is a company or other incorporated body, a certificate of incorporation and a list of directors and shareholders.
- If the application is for a partnership, a copy of any partnership agreement.
- A $440.00 application fee.
- A $28.20 fee, per person, for Police vetting. (Each person named as being in control of the licence will be vetted by the Police. There is no vetting charge if the person has been vetted in the previous three months.)
You should allow a minimum of six weeks for your application to be processed.

While your applications are being processed at Land Transport New Zealand, you can commence your driver induction and Area Knowledge training with the Nelson City Taxi Society.
DRIVER TRAINING
The Nelson City Taxi Society is an Approved Workplace Training Organization. You will commence driver training to first obtain a Certificate of Approval from the Society which will enable you to operate a Nelson City Taxi. Your induction training will include various NZQA unit standards which will go toward achieving the NZQA National Certificate in Small Passenger Transport with Taxi Strand.
Your driver induction training will include;
- Area Knowledge Certificate for the Nelson Region
- Vehicle operations and Dispatch procedures on road
- Nelson City Taxi Society Operating rules
- NZQA unit 1734 - Knowledge of Health and stress for driving
- NZQA unit 3462 - Knowledge of traffic law for the purpose of safe driving
- NZQA unit 17593 - Apply safe work practices in the workplace
- NZQA unit 1750 - Foster effective passenger relations
- NZQA unit 1748 - Skills required to assist passengers with special needs
- NZQA unit 15165 - Transport passengers in wheelchairs using total mobility vehicles (If required)
- Solo operation of a Nelson City Taxi to the standard required.
The Nelson Area Knowledge examination paper is available here. Once you have researched the paper and you believe you can meet the performance criteria, contact us to book an examination time. If you meet the criteria, a Certificate will be issued.
